HAILE GOLD MINE
The town of Kershaw was incorporated in 1888. Kershaw is located on the very south end of Lancaster County, South Carolina. "There's gold in these hills!" Haile Gold Mine is located just three miles from the town limits and was at one time the single largest gold producer in the Appalachian region. Gold was first discovered in 1825 and is still being mined today!
FORTY ACRE ROCK
Kershaw is also home to one of the biggest local hiking spots in our region, "Forty Acre Rock." Forty Acre Rock Heritage Preserve encompasses 2,965 acres of the most diverse protected area in the Piedmont region, including granitic flatrocks, waterslides, waterfalls, a beaver pond, caves, hardwood and pine forests, and a variety of wildflowers and wildlife. This trail takes you through a forest to the top of a huge standing rock offering fantastic views of the surrounding Sandhills.
Directions: Drive north on US 601 for approximately 9 miles and turn left onto Reserve Road (Lancaster County S-29-27). Drive for .4 miles and the parking area for the lower trailhead is on the left.
